The first synthetic research and education center for light metals in the nation
Institute of Light Metals (ILM) establishment
In April 2021, Kumamoto University and University of Toyama established the synthetic research and education center for light metals in the whole country.
In addition to the magnesium research that Kumamoto University is focusing on and the aluminum research that Toyama University excels at, a new equipment for titanium research have been introduced at both Universities.
Light metals, known for lightweight and durable materials, are used in a wide range of fields such as electric vehicles(EVs), aerospace, bridges, and medical equipment, and numerous countries are now intensifying their research and development on them.
We at ILM promote the joint research and human resource excanges which take advantage of each one of strong points efficiently, with consideration of working with private sectors to develop practical applications of light metals.
